Author Royalties & Advance Policy
Red Hollow Publishing (RHP) operates under a traditional publishing model. RHP funds agreed publishing services, including editing, formatting, cover design, and publication. Authors receive compensation through royalties and, where offered, an advance against those royalties.
Author Royalty Rates
Our proposed standard royalty rates are:
Paperback: 7.5% of the book’s list price.
Hardcover: 10% of the book’s list price.
Ebook: 25% of the publisher’s Net Receipts.
The applicable rates, sales-channel provisions, and payment schedule will be specified in each title’s signed publishing agreement.
Advances Against Royalties
RHP’s planned standard advance for selected new titles is $500 per book, subject to an approved acquisition budget and a signed publishing agreement. The agreement will specify the advance amount and payment dates.
An advance is an early payment of the author’s royalties. Earned royalties are credited against the advance until it has earned out. Additional royalty payments become payable once cumulative royalties exceed the advance.
For example, an author receiving a $500 advance who subsequently earns $650 in royalties would receive an additional $150.
Poor sales alone do not require the author to repay an unearned advance. Any repayment obligations arising from a contractual breach will be addressed in the publishing agreement.
Definition of Net Receipts
For ebook royalties, Net Receipts means the revenue actually received by RHP from ebook sales after applicable retailer or distributor deductions, payment-processing fees, refunds, and sales taxes. Deductions already reflected in a platform’s payment will not be deducted again.
Editing, formatting, cover design, marketing, and general operating expenses are not deducted from the ebook royalty base. The publishing agreement will define permitted deductions precisely.
Paperback and hardcover royalties are calculated on list price, subject to the sales provisions stated in the agreement.

Literary Agent Commissions & Royalty Distribution
For represented authors, Red Hollow Publishing will follow the payment instructions established in the publishing agreement and authorized by the author.
Literary agent commissions are determined by the author’s agreement with their agency.
Red Hollow Publishing does not establish or regulate literary agent commission rates and is not responsible for disputes arising from separate author-agent representation agreements.
Payment to the authorized literary agency shall satisfy RHP's corresponding royalty or advance payment obligation to the author, as provided in the publishing agreement.
All royalty reporting, payment schedules, and agency payment authorizations shall be governed by the applicable publishing agreement.
